As well as the shipwrecking of the Armada that Patriot refers to, there was a great deal of contact between ships sailing from ports such as Galway and other on the West Coast with Spanish ports. My own family (from Sligo) have a lot of Spanish blood and this is clearly visible in the complexion and features of many family members. So probably also some opportunity for references to cross in songs.
