I regularly sit down and open my songbook at random, or the separate index, and play - either song titles all starting with the same letter or go on from the place the book opened.

The 250 are songs I can perform with my own acompaniment or ones I sing alone, not ones I can join in with.

After practising in the same sort of way for about 35 years I think it is not an unreasonable number, though I can no longer sing/play some of them from memory - Tam lin now, no problem, some tiddly thing with 4 verses, no chance. Weird thing, memory.
