When I was in high school I was required to study a poem called "The New Patriot".
I forget who wrote it, but I seem to recall he had been a soldier in WWI.

The poem basically said that the time of national patriots is over and the new patriot would be one who fought for universal humanity.

I liked the idea then and I still do.
