The idea of the "rapture" is not in the bible. It's a concept introduced in the 1800's by a Calvinistic John Darby. It's the basis for the present evangelical fundamentalist movement that has
spread the misinformation that the US is a Christian nation, that Jesus is coming back twice and all that don't profess an adoration for him will go to hell. These "dispensationalist Darbyites" have found their way into American politics and their view is toxic. It threatens the well-known part of the Constitution that says "congress shall make no longs respecting the establishment of religion". This idea of fundamenalism is expressed by "Left Behind" novels of LeHaye and the machinations of Falwell, Robertson and W. Bush.
