Supposedly it was Judy Collins who
said she thinks about toothpaste when she
has to sing at a particularly emotion-
fraught moment.

All I know is that it worked for me when I sang
at my mother's funeral. (It also helped that I could hear
my mother's voice in my ear saying, "Sing out!")
