Let's make a fine distinction, then, between remorse and regret. One is recognizing something in the past was ill-chosen or would have been better done differently (remorse). The other is the desire to change what has happened in the past.

While remorse may be indicative of sentience, regret is a waste of time since it accomplishes nothing. To face one's own past and move forward bravely is the best skill one can have, I think. Some past events are harder to face than others.
