Bill D: Yes, life was much simpler then, vegetable matter & some paper waste would go on the compost pile. Glass would be recycled (through deposits, or jam making). Paper & cardboard would be used for starting your coal fire. Most other household waste would be burnt on the coal fire. This just left your standard metal trash can as an 'Ash can'
The rubbish is as complex (or simple) as our lives!
