Thread Name: Lyr Add: Matthew Brady
Subject: Matthew Brady
Matthew Brady was a bushranger in Tasmania (Australia)
in the early 1800's.

MATTHEW BRADY

(Ian Clarke)
Matthew Brady, forger, was sentenced by the Crown,
To serve out his time in Botany Bay.
He upset the law in Sydney, was further penalised,
And transported to Hobart far away.
In '24 he stole a whaleboat, landed round the coast.
Thirteen others formed his outlaw crew.
A gentleman bushranger, he did not set out to kill,
The ladies found him quite respectful too.

Brady's Lookout towers o'er the Tamar River strand,
A hilltop from which Matthew had a view across the land,
Each day he'd swim the river wide,
To see his girl on the other side,
Then swim back to the safety of his band.

Brady ordered dinner at Bethune's near Hobart town,
After bailing up the household staff,
On a visit to Lake River he was told of a reward,
But the thought of being captured made him laugh.
In '26 near Launceston, betrayed by Cowan there,
To John Batman he surrendered up his gun.
The ladies at his trial in the courtroom loudly wept,
Matt Brady and his men were finally hung.
