If you want to do serious audio recording and editing with Linux (this is rapidly becoming quite practical nowadays) take a look at Agnula (A GNU/Linux Audio Distribution) which not only includes lots of audio apps but also a kernel patched for low latency, which you need if you're doing any serious multitracking. There are two versions, one Debian-based and the other Red Hat-based.
There's nothing to stop you using the same distro for ordinary computing too, and installing other applications from the main distribution it's based on.
A good source for technical help is the Linux Audio Users List which I subscribe to. Documentation (or lack of, and doing something about it) has been a hot topic lately. There is an online archive available in several different views. The list is a good place to spot announcements of new software releases.
I do all I need at the moment with arecord, audacity, normalize and cdrecord.
