I have a good sense of direction, but some of those subway exits turn enough that it isn't clear what direction you're facing when you reach the street. I've had difficulties getting oriented ever since the twin towers went away, and if the Empire State or Chrysler Building aren't in view. Remembering that the avenue numbers are small in the east and big in the west means you have a few block hike to retrace your steps if you're going in the wrong direction on a two-way cross street.

I've resolved to carry a small compass when I'm there.
