Thread Name: Lyr Add: Am I Blue (from Ethel Waters)
Subject: Lyr Add: AM I BLUE
Lyr. Add: AM I BLUE Version by Ethel Waters, recorded April 1929 (Original lyrics, Grant Clark; music Harry Akst, 1929)
I'm just a woman, a lonely woman, Waiting on the weary shore; I'm just a woman, that's only human, One you should be sorry for. Woke up this mornin' along about dawn, Without a warnin' I found he was gone. How could he do it? Why should he do it? He never done it before.
(Chorus) Am I blue? Am I blue? Ain't these tears in these eyes tellin' you? Am I blue? Why, you'd be too, If each plan with your man done fell through, There was a time when I was his only one, But now I'm the sad and lonely one, Lawdy- was I gay? Until today- Now he's gone and we're through, Am I blue.
I know it- He's in Chicago And I'm down here in Birmin'ham, Tryin' to git the money to go and find my honey, I am; yes indeed I am! I've got the blues in my heart, And my shoes want to start And I'm in a jam; a terrible jam.
Oh, don't ask me about you Why do you ask me about you? Can't you see with these eyes telling you. How can you ask me about you? Why wouldn't you be too, If your plan with your man had done fell through. Don't I remember the time when I was his only one, But look at me now, I'm the sad and lonely one. Oh, didn't I used to be gay, Oh, 'til today, Oh, dear Lord, tonight(?) Am I blue.
The verses following the chorus depart from the song as sung by the many who followed Ethel Waters. Her version is unique. On the recording, Tommy Dorsey was on trombone and Manny Klein on trumpet. Help is needed to verify the next to last line.
I don't have the original Clark-Akst sheet music, but the first verse and chorus may have been followed by this verse two:
It's aggravatin', to stand here waitin', Waitin' for a triflin' man. It set me hatin' to stand here waitin', Suicide's my only plan. I think it's awful, his treatment of me, It's most unlawful how mean he can be. I can't forget him, I'm bound to get him, I'll run him down if I can.
Lyr. Add: Am I Blue Billie Holiday version
It was a morning, long before dawn Without a warning I found he was gone. How could he do it Why should he do it He never done it before.
Am I blue Am I blue Ain't these tears, in these eyes telling you How can you ask me "Am I blue"? Why, wouldn't you be too, If each plan with your man done fell through.
There was a time When I was his only one But now I'm, the sad and lonely one. Lonely.
Was I gay, until today, Now he's gone, and we're through, Am I blue. Am I Blue
The Travelers sang the last verse "Lordy, was I gay 'til today..."
Lyr. Add: Am I Blue Bette Midler version
I'm just a woman, a lonely woman, waiting on the weary shore. I'm just a woman who's only human, One you should feel sorry for.
Well, I woke up this morning along about dawn. Without a warning I found that he was gone. Why did he do it? How could he do it? He'd never done it before.
Am I blue. Am I blue. Ain't these tears in these eyes tellin' you? Oh, am I blue? Well, I bet you would be, too, If esch plan with your man done fell through.
There was a time I was his only one. But now I'm the sad and lonely one.
Was I gay 'til today? But now that man is gone, He's gone and we are through. Am I blue.
There was a time I was his only one. But now, a now, now, now, I'm the sad and lonely one. Oh God, I'm lonely.
But I remember, Oh I remember when I was gay, That was up until today, 'Cause now that man is gone, He's gone and we are through, Am I, am I, well, would you believe it if I told you I'm blue?
Lyr. Add: Am I Blue (parody) Funny Lady Soundtrack- Fanny
Am I blue Am I blue Ain't these tears in these eyes telling you Am I blue You'd be too if each plan with your man Done fell through There was a time, I was his only one But now I'm the sad and lonely one Lonely Was I gay Till today Now he's gone and we're through Am I blue There was a time, I was his only one But now I'm the sad and lonely one Oh lonely Was I gay Till today Now he's gone and we're through Now he's gone and we're through Oh God, did you hear that note It was given to me by my friend Grace Moore on my birthday Oy, was she glad to get rid of it Though I think I give it to her back, or her front Am I blue Oy, is this thing heavy.
Chorus: Am I blue Yes I'm blue It started the day I lost you Nobody ever loved somebody like I do Am I blue Am I blue.
Just this mornin' Over coffee I sat there cryin' cause you're gone, long gone I didn't know just how much I was gonna miss you till I spent my first night alone Am I blue Yes I'm blue How could I have been such a fool Now look at all the misery I'm going through Am I blue Am I blue Tried to call and say I'm sorry I couldn't get you on the line You'll never know just how much I'm wishin' you would show up and say you've changed your mind.
