Thread Name: Origins: I will arise and rub my sleepy eyes
Subject: Lyr Add: ANGEL GABRIEL
Oh, my soul, my soul is going for a rest, in the arms of the angel Gabriel, And I'll climb on a hill and look to the west, And I'll cross over Jordan to the land.
ANd I'll sit me down in the old arm chair, Brother, I will never tire, ANd old Satan may sneeze but I will take my ease, And I'll warm myself at the holy fire.
Chorus: I will shout, I will dance, I will wake up early in the morn, and I will rise and rub my sleepy eyes, when old Gabriel's a-blowin' on his horn.
Oh, my soul, my soul is goin' for a rest, Gonna rest as sure as you are born, ANd I'll look like a blackbird sittin' on his nest, When old Gabriel's a-blowin' on his horn.
ANd I'll leave my cloak safe upon the shore, For I'll have brand-new garments for to wear, And I'll have brand-new shoes and I'll never get the blues, And the angels will come and curl my hair.
Chorus
Oh, why should I wait until it's time to leave, Oh, I'll pack my trunk and I'll go, And my brother, oh, hark, and don't you ever grieve, for I'm going up to glory very slow,
And I'll eat my meals, yes, three times a day, You can bet your life I won't be late, ANd I'll have lots of mon' when you prepare to come, For I'm gonna take the tickets at the gate.
Chorus
The above is from a CD by an excellent old-time group from Alabama by the name of Flying Jenny (Jim and Joyce Cauthen and someone else, the CD is out in my car, so I can't check it right now.)
it's early for me, and I'm typing this before I go to work, so I'm sorry for any typo's that I may have made. I just checked it over, and I couldn't find any. The first verse really doesn't rhyme, that's not my mistake.
