When I was a kid we had two books that in particular came out often for bedtime reading. One was a collection of poems, edited by Louis Untermeyer, called Rainbow in the Sky. The other was a collection, edited by Bennett Cerf, called Houseful of Laughter. My kids find most of it just as funny as we did. That's where the Thurber bit came from that I posted above.
