Many of the Chinese arts focus on the Chi before the physical aspects. Certain schools of Kung Fu will not teach the form until the pupil has shown mastery of his or her own spirit.

Probably quite sensible really. If the recruiting sergeant insisted that soldiers could manage their anger before they were given a gun we would probably all be better off:-)
