One practical point of course is that ribbons were cheap and portable - a travelling pedlar could carry a wide variety around with him, and you could buy them for a loved one or yourself when you hadn't much to buy them with. And even cheap ribbons can be very durable, and can make a fine show. People haven't changed that much really.
