The "method" here works best if there are fairly dense stands of a single type of nut tree fairly densely covering a wide area.

That isn't likely to happen in a subdivision, though, and that is probably part of the problem with squirrels in general. The old guy up the block from us has a half-dozen pecan trees in his back yard and is convinced the squrrels are damaging his investment. It's a vicious cycle--his trees are the bait and the squirrels come looking for nuts, are trapped and shot. He should have planted maples if he didn't want squirrels.
