I sometimes think the best way to build and maintain a friendship is not so much to look for thinks you both like, but for things you dislike in common.
If you find someone doesn't dislike something you dislike, it doesn't really matter. But if you find they dislike something you love, that's a real barrier. And when you find something you both detest, you've got an ally. That's the moral of Casablanca, I reckon.
