My impression is that Osama is a true believer, a man who gave up everything (in the sense of a cushy, safe, wealthy material lifestyle) to risk his life fighting first the Russians (where he was in much combat and got wounded), then the Americans. This was a man who expected to die for the cause. Yes, he probably does want to feel powerful and important (you could say that of a great many people), but what in the world makes you think he "doesn't give a rat's ass" about Islam?

And yes, I think it's quite possible that the Bush administration was in collusion with him in some way, regardless. After all, he did work for the USA for quite a while before becoming "the enemy".
