I recall reading a theory some years ago, that talked about how historians are unsure which came first... beer or bread...   There is some tangential evidence to support the supposition that one is a failed attempt at the other, but with a dearth of solid evidence, it could go in either direction...

I think it's neat that we may live in a world where making beer came before baking bread....
