Cats vary a lot, eg. we have had some that are lap cats and others that are not, some that like thier tummy stroked and others that don't etc. It doesn't seem to me that your cat is exhibiting problem behaviour - he just doesn't like your attempt at stroking him. As others have indicated, leave him to his own devices. He will come round in his own time if and when he chooses to.

Another thing to remember is cats are quite different to dogs and you can't train or discipline them in the same way. A dog wants to fit in and be part of the family and once it has found its position in the pack, will take and respond even to words like "bad dog" without even raising a hand let alone considering smacking it. Generaly with a cat, all you achieve by attempting to discipline is to frighten the animal.
