The most memorable experience I have had with a chipmunk was on a hike high up in the Cascade Range in Oregon. Stopping for lunch, we sat on a log and got out our sandwiches. A Chip came out from behind tje log and stared at us in astonished curiosity. He hopped up on the log and approached us as though we were just a new kind of bear. When we threw him bits of sandwich he backed off a bit then started stuffing them into his cheek pouches. Eventually he bounded away and up a stump.

It was something to realize that we were probably the first humans he had ever seen.

Zkwirrrellls, on the other hand, I have not seen close up.
