Funnily enough this has been running through my head and I had come
to the same conclusion as you, I was thinking that it might be,

Grey skies WREATHE another grey town
Greyer than the tomb, the mist comes down

This might make some sense out of it, but, as you so rightly say
Snuffy, none of it seems to make sense anyway, so just sing something
that rhymes and sounds good to you.
