The history of pro sports is littered with teams that could've, and should've, but lacked that special something to become winners. This is Joe Torre's greatest strength, both as a person and manager. In Toronto, Cito Gaston had the same quality. Folks here said he had the talent, which was true, but a manager has to meld them into champions. Last year during a Yankee broadcast, I heard John Sterling deliver this wonderful line, and I thought I'd share it with you. He said,"if Ernest Borgnine and Karl Malden had a baby together, he'd have looked like Joe Torre." It broke me up, man, and all's I can say is, let the games begin!
