Over the years I've known a number of people who were ernestly, omptionally involved in the tragedies of those they had never met and knew nothing about. Some suffered nervous breakdowns, more experienced a kind of emotional burn out. Close involvement in such things in unwholesome and unhealthful. Offer aid and support when appropriate; act when it's possible. Anything more is not a bad idea.
