In the "for what it's worth" department, the girl probably didn't have any tutoring in pain control--breathing, etc. I didn't use an epidural--you won't get near my spine with a needle, thank you very much. The only pain control was a pudendal block, a long needle inserted on either side that numbs the nerves and works specifically for things like the episiotomy. (Good thing my hard labor didn't last long. 3 hours for the first, 1.5 hours for the second.)

Since technically the young mother is the patient, the family could be chased out. And the patient's wishes respected.
