Thread Name: Lyr/Chords Req: Cotton-Eyed Joe
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Cotton eyed Joe
I was going to submit a few songs that were in my grandfathers repetoire, but after reviewing the debate on Cotton Eyed Joe as a racist song, I know that my submissions, would not get by without some comment. Pity though, as the songs were indicative of the language used at the time and I know as a small child, I just considered them romatic and they are a part of my family's history despite the fact that the songs are no longer PC. I'm inclined to agree with Dan Evergreen that songs depict history and some of it isn't always nice. Anyways, I had another reason for wanting to submit the songs, as my granfathers past is a bit of a mystery from the age of 15 to 30 and we'd like to know where in the states he might have been living and if it was possible to trace it through his music. Two of the songs are "Down in d' Canebrake" and "Nava Nava My Navajo". Anyone ever heard of them?
