Thanks, people! It was a nice little impromptu birthday celebration as I had let slip to 42 between songs at song circle on Monday, that it was indeed my birthday. Usually nobody knows about it. So, she bought me a little chocolate cake at Tim Horton's, the quintessential Canadian donut shop. Very nice!

That poem...it happened this way. I felt that I was perishing, positively drowning under an avalanche of sonnets from BB, and I had to fight back in some more direct way than quoting Dylan lyrics. So I just went for the basic structure, ignoring the necessary rhyming rules, and went with stream of consciousness. I just wrote whatever came to mind.

I now cannot shake from my head the vision of Drucilla, Nymph of the Bloor Street Viaduct! The Viaduct in question is a huge bridge that spans the Don Valley which divides the city of Toronto (a metropolis of about 3 million) into two irreconcilable worlds...the East End and the West End. Downtown is sandwiched in between and bisected by the valley to some extent. Broken-hearted lovers and other depressed people used to leap off the viaduct to their doom (or at least threaten to), but this is no longer possible because it's all sealed off on the sides with a sort of heavy chain-link mesh that even Chongo Chimp could not get through...although he could probably climb up to the top if he wanted to. It was second in popularity only to the Golden Gate Bridge for taking that "final plunge".

Bloor Street Viaduct

Yet MORE Bloor Street Viaduct!

Drucilla, wherefore art thou Drucilla?!? And whither goest thou?

Much to ponder upon.

I recommend this form of free-verse quasi-sonnet for unlocking the hidden dreams and longings of the poetic mind when all else fails.
