Subject: They Say Tenants Don't Vote
LOL. In a campaign I worked (orchestrated), the bad guys got word of our side's plan to hang flyers in the lobbies of several thousand apartment dwellers' buildings. The tenant vote was a key one for our cause, and this last bit was to be the crowning touch of our part of the campaign. "They say tenants don't vote" was the big bold headline, with a short blurb about the cause, and below that their polling place was indicated. We'd already done a saturation phone-bank and felt this reminder to vote, and where, was all we needed to deliver the votes they promised.
We heard the bad guys were wise to us, so with one call I was able to redirect the effort all over town, just hours before the scheduled rollout of our many, MANY volunters. I crossed my fingers, then sat back to see what would happen.
It rained and rained on the opposition volunteers, all night long, as they looked for our paper in vain. We had changed our drop to the next night (still raining)! If they ever heard about it, they sure never came back to take them down. They had us outnumbered in workers, we were pretty sure-- but our volunteers were more mobile, more committed, and certainly more responsive to last-minute changes in plans.
We won by exactly the margin we had projected we would gain from the tenant vote-- about two thousand votes.
Sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug! :~)
