Although we Canadians have not had an effective conscription program since 1945, we have problems and social divisions every bit as distressing as you have south of the 49th parallel. Every time Edmund and I cross the border your way we are struck anew with the significant differences, and aware that although we enjoy visiting we would have a tough adjustment if we had to stay.
