Subject: RE: H'py Battle of Aughrim day - Ire & World
About Italians, I can assure you that they took part to the battle of Aughrim, as they did in many important battles the wide world over(including the Little Big Horn massacre). And they were soldiers under virtually every one of the flags you mentioned, at least the ones who did not own the smallest piece of land to enjoy the spaghetti harvest. Simply they did not know that they were Italians, since Italy did not exist in those times, and the Italy peninsula was divided in many regions whose languages and habits were so different among themselves that an "Italian" could not understand
another "Italian" who lived, say, 200 km from him.
About spaghetti harvest, to be honest, the dates do not match: the spaghetti harvest does not come in July, but in October, to allow the fruits to dry up and gain that hard consistency that allows them to be cooked succesfully and be mixed with tomato or chocolate sauce.
Anyway I don't disagree about the suggestion of putting fireworks in Italians' hats. Their majority elected Mr. Berlusconi some years ago, and their mind may need some strong enlightening.
