One of the most terrific current movies that no one is seeing is Lucie Aubrac, because it is French. It tells the true story of a woman in the French Resistance who snatched her husband (sentenced to death for being part of the Resistance) out of a Gestapo Prison through courage, and a lot of cunning. Something about the film puzzled me, and it was only when I spoke to the other person who I know has seen the film, a woman, that I figured it out. It is the only film I have seen almost ever that is about two married people who love each other so strongly that they will do anything to be reunited. Even more than that, the film never talks about it at all -- everyone just assumes that this makes sense, is quite normal. (A French film too!). It is not even as if the war is the binding force between them: it is as if it is something pesky in the way -- that if they can survive, everything will go back to what it was. It was nice to see marriage treated as something strong and fine for a change.
