If you've got to choose between Don Meixner's friend who's decent face to face with people who need help, while being a prejudiced bastard in theory and when they get to vote, and some right-on liberal who wouldn't give a person in trouble the time of day, sure, I'd sooner have Don's friend for a neighbour. And I've known people like that. People who are racists in theory, but make exceptions for the people they actually meet. Hard-nosed softies.
But I've also known people who have the imagination to realise that humanity doesn't stop outside their circle of neighbourliness, and that it's no good holding out a helping hand, while at the same time putting in the boot.
Love your neighbour, fine, but love your enemy too. Do good to those that hate you. "Noone ever said it would be easy being a rabbit."
