The "beta" label was probably appropriate in this case, since there was appparently a coordinated effort to "roll a new version" and some changes were made (to plug a couple of vulnerabilities, for example) with a re-release of a "more finished" version under the "same new ver no" identity. The previous "release" was - in the fine print - labelled as a beta. I haven't followed it closely enough to worry about the semantics of it, but the "same ver no" is now "improved" and available, and people may want to "update within this version," if they got theirs a month or more ago (particularly for the vulnerability patch, which appears to be recent).

The info linked will probably be of more interest to those new to Firefox than to old hands, but there is some interesting info on the available plug-ins that may not (based on comments seen) be known by some who've used it for a while. Comments on website compatibility are worth noting. (Even in a "bad" situation, it's good to understand what the situation is.)
