As observed,"formulas" have been used for decades. But it used to be that the lyrics had to make sense and be sung so that you could understand what they were saying.
Let's not overlook the fact that much music Mudcatters like is formulaic too: "Ooooooooo, that bad ol' system's gettin' me down!"
