Well, the Gibson Co. in about 1924 made at least one 24" bass banjo with their latest (pre-Mastertone) tone ring, and later made at least one real Mastertone bass banjo (though not 24", as I recall).

Both were 4-stringers, as is proper for a bass. Them extra strings are just silly, and confusing as well.
