What time of year were you in Quebec? Even other Anglophone Canadians aren't welcomed there around St-Jean-Baptiste Day (June 24). And I've had the experience often enough in the States of not having my Canadian currency accepted. Many were downright rude about it. I always convert it to US funds before I visit the US now.
