Parents love to cheer on what they see as effort that is important to the child-- not just effort from their own parental view, but the child's view.

And know that they will tend to revert to the parent/child dynamic whenever one lives under their roof, BTW, not unique to you or to these folks or to your particular situation. Parental beings, well, they tend to be parental, no matter how adult you are when you come under their roof. Wired that way. They might actually be showing you some parenting wisdom you might not have seen yet-- try a fresh look to see what it might be?
