Thread Name: Lyr Req: Mammy's little baby / Shortnin' Bread
Subject: Lyr Add: SHORTNIN' BREAD
I learned this in grade school music class(the '30s weren't high on PC. It also was popularized in the late '20s, early '30s by Rudy Vallee (I think)and was played fairly frequently on the radio when I was a kid.

The version we learned was sort of like the one given here.

Get out de skillet,
Get out de lead,
Mammy's gwine make a little short'nin' bread.
Da ain't all, she's qwine ta do
Mammy's gwine to make a little coffee, too.

Mammy's little baby loves short'nin', short'nin',
Mammy's little baby loves short'nin' bread.
(I think we might have repeated this)

Three little chillin, lyin' in bed,
Two was sick and de other most dead,
Mammy called de doctor,
De doctor said,
Feed dem chillin on short'nin' bread.

Chorus;

I stole de skillet,
I stole de lead,
I stole de gal to make shortnin bread.
Paid six dollahs fo' de skillet,
Paid six dollahs fo' de lead
Spent six months in jail eatin' shortnin' bread

Chorus:
