I don't think of him as American, I think of him as British, and he doesn't sound remotely American. And I sure wouldn't compare Cary Grant (Archie) with Bob Hope. Bob Hope was a big "yuck" in my book. He may have been popular, but I never liked him. He lived here from such an early age that he sounded American. Grant didn't.
