Dysons are good, the upright models are great for those of a taller stature, crappy if you are only 5 foot 2, but they do come in jolly colours like purple and red, or green and yellow. And they frighten me when I had one demo'd over my carpet that I'd only vacuumed that morning.....

Basically, get a labrador dog for the edible crumbs and learn to wear shoes in the house.....!
