Hold them "up in playing position"--I presume you're not talking about the standard rotating three-instument hangers? (I made my own with an old gooseneck mike stand and a piece of plywood shaped like a wheel, with cutouts for the instruments--doesn't quite work safely yet, needs some kind of restraining system to keep the goods from slipping out during on-stage excitement)
