Sounds similar to MacIntosh's Toffee Bars, which came in a plaid package. I think it was only available in Canada, but I'm not sure about that.

When it was cold enough, you could break off sections. It became quite malleable when warmer. If you gave some to the dog he'd get it stuck in his back teeth and go nuts. :-)
