I may be the one off track here, but if it's the Dear Abby column I'm thinking of it's a case of people not understanding what her son DOES, rather than not understanding what he SAYS. (He's a professional Elvis impersonator who obviously looks like Elvis even in regular street clothes, and some folks make rude comments about his hairdo, etc., which she finds distressing.)
