The gypsy players I've seen hold the thumb flat across the curled first, the thumb over first finger with the pick centred (more or less) under the top joint of the thumb, or possibly just slightly more towards the top of the thumb with about 0.5-1.0 cm of the pick protruding.

Don't forget that gypsy players also tend to play with very thick (several mm) picks.
