Weelittledrummer: This is what I wrote after last year:Usual packed house on Sunday for this. The room, as KSS said had been completely redesigned so the bands played in a sort of pit, the disco dance floor. Somehow the old scuffed and battered room suited skiffle better! Also no draught bitter on so lots of to and fro to the downstairs bar.
The old scuffed and battered audience (very enthusiastic participation both choral and terpsichorean)also included some youngsters (ie under 40s!)this year, as well as Steve Benbow's Protege ( on cajun rub-board and fez)who last year brought the average age down a whole decade, the Mounthoolies were a young band and The Acoustic Astronauts had a fiddle player who was, I guess about 13 (they also had a diminutive double bass player in Betty Davila who could hardly reach the top of the neck. Regulars Zimmer Boys and King Street Smith were there, too, sadly, Steve Benbow had injured himself on his smallholding so couldn't join the rest of the New City Gamblers.
As well as playing 'Catters KSS and SBP, Leadfingers and myself were in the audience helping to raise the average age. Plenty of washboards of varying complexity (I took pity on everyone and left the Washboard of Mass Destruction at home)but no washtub or teachest bases. Quite a range of styles, too, all what the US 'catters would call Old Timey.
