Thread Name: Music Halls pre blackface
Subject: RE: Music Halls pre blackface
Ideally I'm looking for a song which was sung in Britain before the surge in black face performances, which includes words or phrases with double meanings. I.e. Cockney slang or puns or parodies reflecting on a previous performance which every one will understand as a comment on something outside of the actual text.

This is to contrast in an essay about Signifyin(g) - a black linguistic term and whether it can be applied to non-black musics.

Tall order?
