In most civilized countries, drug prices are negotiated between drug companies and the government. If you want to sell your drug in, say, Canada, you must negotiate the retail price with the government.

In the U.S. you are free to set the price as high as you want to. Since you have a patent on the drug for 15 years or so, there won't be much competition. Then you give discounts to the Veteran's Administration, HMOs and others but not to individuals because you want to screw them as much as possible. Also, you do not give discounts to Medicare because that was made illegal by the Bush administration in a questionable vote in congress last year.
