I don't think there was a question, there was just the answer. But let me ask the member of this household who read that book most recently:

Oh, Moonglow, what is the significance of "42" in the universe?"

>>Forty-two was simply the answer to the great question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. It was divulged by a supercomputer, after a thousand (or more) years of waiting. However, the creators of this supercomputer only asked for the answer to this question- to find the question, it would take another, more powerful supercomputer and another thousand (or so) years of waiting. The answer Teresa suggests is one possibility in the Hitchhiker's Guide, when Arthur is attempting to teach a neanderthal(?) to play Scrabble. Ford, somehow coming to the possibility that the question might be imprinted on Arthur's subconscious, has Arthur draw random tiles out of a rabbit-skin (Agrajag's skin, to justify the detail) bag of tiles, spelling out something along the lines of 'What is six times eight' (or something like that, not sure of the last number, but pretty sure it is eight)<<
