I picked up a second-hand Manuel Rodriguez steel-strung dreadnought acoustic for £300 a few years ago and I'm amazed at the purity of tone, balance and resonance that this very plain looking instrument has.
I own several more expensive guitars and some novel ones, like my plastic Maccaferri, but if I'm taking a guitar off the wall for an unplugged night out the Rodriguez is the one!
The nearest thing I've played to it would be a Lowden.
