I met Mayor Dinkens of NYC once. It was at a Fourth of July fireworks display. There were porta-potties set up just outside the viewing area. As I waited on line, his limo drove up, he hopped out (clean hanky in hand) and started shaking hands with the people on line. He thought we were a reception committee.

When he got to me I said "I don't care who he is, he isn't getting ahead of me on line." As he realized his mistake, he got very angry at his staff and stormed off. No sense of humor.

Koch would have managed to save face with a quip.
